The Words of Jakob Böhme

I came across some of the works of Jakob Böhme. I have not fully read up about him but some of his statements are deep and true.

Termed mystic, I feel he has a point in some of his theology. You can read up more about him here.

Here are his most striking words:

“For he that will say, I have a Will, and would willingly do Good, but the earthly Flesh which I carry about me, keepeth me back, so that I cannot; yet I shall be saved by Grace, for the Merits of Christ. I comfort myself with his Merit and Sufferings; who will receive me of mere Grace, without any Merits of my own, and forgive me my Sins. Such a one, I say, is like a Man that knoweth what Food is good for his Health, yet will not eat of it, but eateth Poison instead thereof, from whence Sickness and Death, will certainly follow.”

And this also makes me think:

“It is not to be thought that the life of darkness is sunk in misery and lost as if in sorrowing. There is no sorrowing. For sorrow is a thing that is swallowed up in death, and death and dying are the very life of the darkness.”

Shinichi Maruyama: High speed water photo shooting

I am a lover of the arts. I am an artist myself, practising my artistry mostly in my head. But then just when you think you have seen it all, then comes just another one. I recently came across some of the works of the artist, Shinichi Maruyama. This is what is said of him:

each bucket of water + black ink ‘stroke’ is unique and ephemeral.shinichi maruyama can never copy or recreate these images.’ I know something fantastic is happening, a decisive moment, but I can’t fully understand the event until I look at these images.’maruyama has been involved in many worldwide advertising campaigns, utilizing his expertise in ice, liquid/splash, and specializing in movement in his works.years of lighting research and the advancement of retouching have made it easier tohave a strong idea of exactly how a photo will look even before the shoot begins.however in photographing liquid and subjects in movement, it is impossible to foreseewhat the end result will be, and it is this spontaneity that enables maruyama to havemore fun creating his work.

You can check out his website for some cool stuff: http://www.shinichimaruyama.com/

WordPress plugin for sending SMS- DuduMobile WP-SMS

At the first WordCamp last year,  I discussed creating plugins using DuduMobile WP-SMS as a case study. At that time, I had not uploaded the plugin to the WordPress plugins repository.

I’d like to announce formally that it is now available for downloads. You can click on the link http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dudumobile-wp-sms/ to download.

Please read the download instructions on the downloads page:

Installation

  1. Upload content of ‘dudumobile-wp-sms.zip’ to the /wp-content/plugins/directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
  3. Go to http://dudumobile.com/ or http://api.dudumobile.com and register for Corporate SMS.
  4. In the DuduMobile ‘Settings’ in WordPress, put in your username and password. You can also fill in the name you want displayed when text messages are sent.
  5. You are good to go!

FAQ

Are the text messages free?

As at time of release for this plugin, DuduSMS is not free. You will have to purchase SMS from Dudumobile’s corporate SMS page. You never know, they may offer it free of charge.

Do you or your organization own Dudumobile/DuduSMS

No, we don’t. We just happen to use the SMS Gateway very often for clients so I thought to plug it into WordPress for ‘plug and play’ installation.

What if I have issues sending SMS?

DuduSMS is not owned by me or the company I work with. For support, go tohttp://dudumobile.com for support

My SMS credit is exhausted, how do I buy more

Head over to the DuduMobile website :|

XBox Kinect on my wishlist

In a recent article I wrote for Ynaija.com, I gave a personal review on the Xbox Kinect based on a less than 20minute encounter with the Kinect.

I spent more time today with my face all sweaty from playing table tennis, ping pong, bowling and football and I must say, it is worth the gaming. Yes, this is a non-gamer talking!

Below is an official video. Some of the comments say it’s an exaggeration. I will say it’s a slight exaggeration but that’s the experience

The Next Generation Web: Facebook | Twitter

Web 2.0 was a term that caused a lot of controversy amongst the laymen, the web designers and the i-do-knows. At a point it referred to the design style of buttons, fonts and layout in general. Then it moved to the types of interactions that occurred on the various websites.

Today, the web has changed drastically. From the layouts and presentations to functionality. Almost gone are the times when your web pages were that: pages. Now, the adventurous power play of engineers’ knowledge of javascript has totally turned around the way we interact with these…pages. Websites are now more like desktop applications. Right now, browsers are turning from just website viewers to cloud computers.  Ladies and gentlemen, it’s the end of the world as we know it!

What fascinates me most in this new era(let us call it that) is the way we identify ourselves using social media tools on the websites we visit most.  Companies have turned to Facebook and Twitter for their interaction with customers. They have slowly given up using their domain names as main contact points on media outlets. It’s even like they have removed the http:// and replaced it with facebook.com/ and then some also have started adapting the @ style.

Facebook has always claimed to be a platform and a utility, and this is the most obvious manifestation of this goal. The real threat to the open web is not from proprietary protocols and closed networks, but from ‘facebook.com/’ and the ‘@’ screen name prefix becoming another well-known prefix like ‘http://’ and ‘www.’. -Eran Hammer-Lahav

How many times do  you watch a program segment on CNN and then see CNN.com? Watch BackStory and you hear Michael Holmes  direct you to facebook.com/backstory.

I was even surprised when my favorite band put their own breaking news on Facebook rather than their website whose feeds I receive in my feed reader.

Give me a random list of 10 of the most popular websites you visit on the regular and I can guarantee that on all 10 you have the ability to log in through your Facebook or your Twitter account.

Facebook recently introduced a new product, the Facebook Messaging which allows for you to chat and email @ facebook.com. Many people I have talked to have confessed that they will not sign up for the email facility. Others have declared that  they don’t see themselves dropping their proprietary emails  for a Facebook email. They’d rather have a Facebook email on the side.

But here is what I see: I see people slowly but surely leaving their yahoos and gmails and hotmails to clench a Facebook mail. Know why? In the near future, Facebook will be the online representation of who you are. Job hire companies will scrutinize your Facebook pages, the companies you work  will require your Facebook address. A good level of e-commerce transactions will have a root from Facebook. Most multiplayer games will be plugged in on Facebook.

What about Twitter? There is most likely going to be a new dimension in tweeting. But of course, the bulk of your quick news will jump out of Twitter feeds. Your name will be written online with a Twitter hyperlink. In fact that has already started. For instance, I integrated a feature on my website which allows  typing @ + anything to automatically link you to a Twitter user. Take for example @seyekuyinu. Putting your mouse over that will give you information about my Twitter.

The future is almost here and I still wait for the perfect hologram that will allow me to be at two places at the same time. A real world and a virtual world in a real world.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s not the end of the world as we know it! It’s just the beginning; and we know it!

Workstyles and the office, the 2011 way.

It’s a new year and I have spent loads of hours in confinement trying to make sure this year turns out much more productive than the last. This has included me refining my calendar entries, sorting out my emails appropriately, organizing my desktop, sorting papers and books.

I have even made new personal policies to help me curb the way I spend my time.  Less time on bbm and the IMs, more time on political pieces, more time on tech blogs, more time on fashion-tip sites( thanks to  @eminakan and @lajidwayem’s nagging at me to get a stylist).

But then, the key question for me right now is ‘how do I organize myself better for working?’. A lot of factors affected my productivity last year. That included going for loads and loads of meetings. Hence spending many hours in the Lagos traffic, working as a manager and also as a technical nut. The internet has made things much easier. Unlike before when you had to search for information, right now, information comes to you.  But for me, sometimes, it has become a distraction.  For instance, just a few minutes ago while looking for a keynote speech at Microsoft, I stumble upon a funny read ‘Microsoft, it’s shit like this that makes you look stupid‘. This type of indiscipline is what I need to deal with.

The environment we work in affects productivity.  True! But then, when you are faced with the constant battles of PHCN and your neighbor’s power generator is humming in your ears, what do you do? Or when you are constantly disrupted by loads of phone calls  just at the middle of the i-am-on-a-roll moment…productivity slides down.

I recently watched a TEDx video of Jason Fried where he talked about why the office is not a good place to work, Why Work Doesn’t Happen At Work.

I have known Jason Fried to be a man with different outlook on things. In fact, I had a little exchange of words(in a good way) with him on Twitter when he mentioned not using Lorem Ipsum as filler text for designs and using the actual texts.  Next his speech, in the video, at first I accepted(and someone totally doesn’t accept). But then, I have come to understand myself better. I may not function perfectly from an office and ‘they’ know me not to. But then, I think like Jason Fried must really mean, it’s about finding that unbreakable/not-interruptible time with yourself.

I see myself getting a bunker in 2011.

The Perimeter Marble Run

I can imagine my room(okay, one of my rooms) having this mechanism. I think this would be bliss.

It’s a few days to Christmas. Do you feel Christmas?

My two takes on the Wikileaks issues

A response to AfroGeekChic‘s post.

A couple of months back, I remember watching Julian Assange on TED.  The things that ran through my mind were:

  • “Hacker. See how they look these days”
  • “What are ‘normal’ moment with these people like”
  • His phone rang during the interview and then I thought ‘Only God knows which man in dark shades and hood is calling him’.
  • When he mentioned about his parents, I go “No wonder!”.

I also went on to think about the type of forces he may be tampering with, his security and how he makes money.

It’s so interesting to know that after his speech, almost everyone in the hall raised their hands in support of Wikileaks. I am sure by now half of the audience would be caught in between supporting his acts and staying clear of them.

Another interesting thing to note is how they rope him in a case of sexual assault just so they can have him caged in while the US thinks of ways to deal with him.  Don’t you think the US paid those two girls to accuse him? If he gets extradited to Sweden on sexual assault charges the US will grab him and whisk him off to ‘Kirikiri’ where he will be drilled until he reveals the identities of everyone who’s ever been involved with WikiLeaks. He will have an ‘accident’ in custody. He will be ‘disappeared’.

This cat and mouse story should get to the climax! Just like AfroGeekChic has also expressed, the sexual assault case is just so flimsy.  The weird Swedish response to these cases are also to be noted.

But then, Julian Assange hasn’t been formally charged with anything concerning Wikileaks. Or has he?  If these charges are real, why don’t the Swedish prosecutors come over to Britain and talk to Assange?

Is there anything wrong about him leaking information that will open the eyes of …the shut?  I personally don’t have anything against that. Plus right now, this whole issue has given a spotlight to geeks referred to as ‘boring’.

This statement made by AfrogeekChic, I like ”Lets just say these cables show us that there is no grey in the realms of those in positions of power and government. There is nasty nasty muck. Pure unadulterated shit and it does not have mine nor any of your best interests at heart. Simples. Remember that next time you go to vote.”

But then also, let’s ask ourselves: Behind the whole idea of leaking information from Scientology documents to diplomatic cables, does Julian Assange have political biases?

In bringing ‘openness’ which should actually build peace, don’t you think this will start a war? I realize how important it is for everyone to know the TRUTH but then sometimes our dirty deeds need to be buried for good.

On this issue, just like Solomon Sydelle said, “I am on the fence. What I do know, for certain, is that the world as we know it has changed”.
